Documenting December: Story 3 of my 2024 December Daily Album + Mini Tutorial

Updated: Jul 8

Stylized text reads "Documenting December twenty four, Story 3 (with a video tutorial)." Beige background with a white tree design.

Welcome back to Documenting December—my Christmas in July blog series where I’m sharing one story a day from my completed 2024 December Daily album. Each post offers a peek at my digital pages created in Affinity Publisher for iPad, along with tips, techniques, and creative encouragement for finishing your own album.

I’ve also included a link to the corresponding post(s) on Ali Edwards’ blog. I encourage you to open it in a separate window so you can see how my digital pages were inspired by the physical versions she shared.

December Daily Story Three: Make Magic

Below are the links to the posts on Ali's blog that were the inspiration for these pages:

There’s a whole lot of folding and flipping going on in Ali’s Story 3 that just isn’t possible to replicate in a fully digital format—but I’m really happy with how my version turned out! In this post, I’ll walk you through how I interpreted her interactive elements and adapted them digitally.

Let’s dive in:

Holiday-themed design with text "Magic Is Something We Make." Features number 3, Christmas decorations, and list of cozy activities. Red, gold stars.

For the title, I used the Magic Is Something We Make 10x8 paper (10x8 Digital Paper Pack), resizing it down to almost a 4x6. I know the original paper has those white dots across the background—and while I could’ve recreated the pattern to fill in the areas below the red star paper (bottom left and right), I took the simple route and just color-filled those sections with the same light beige tone from the paper. And honestly? I think it works just fine!

The pink and red star paper (from the December Daily 2024 Digital 10x8 Paper Pack) represents the red and white striped ribbon Ali used. You’ll also notice she added a red scalloped ribbon along the top of her title. I created a similar effect using the Border Scallop 1 digital stamp. I duplicated the layer to stretch it across the top, merged them into a single layer, recolored the black stamp to red, duplicated it, flipped it, and placed it at the bottom of the paper to peek out—just like ribbon.

Festive decor with red stars, cozy entryway setup with decorative lights. Text highlights magical moments and cozy activities in Florida.

Ali used one Cardstock Scalloped Frame on her page, but I used two (from the 2024 Digital Main Kit)—one for a photo and one for journaling. The "currently" and "magical" word art are from older kits (don’t ask me which ones—I wish I remembered!).

The “1. 2. 3.” journal card is from the 2024 Digital Specialty Card Set. I originally tried lowering the opacity of the card to give it a vellum-like effect, but the gold numbers ended up too faint. So instead, I added a white rectangle behind the card, dropped the opacity of that shape to 85%, and played around with Blending Modes of the Journal Card layer. Linear Burn was the winner—I'm really pleased with the result!

Holiday card with a coffee cup by the beach, featuring "Tis the Season" text. Green and red design with Christmas message about cold weather.

And that giant number "3"? It’s got a little story of its own. Actually, you know what? Just watch the video below—I’ll show you exactly how I created that whole rectangle!

Thank you so much for taking the time to read about Story 3! Please let me know if you have any questions!
